Thanks for posting this Ab.

I find Mark’s refuelling argument a red herring.

I asked a mate who’s taken the Australia to South Africa direct flight numerous times and he reported, yes, the plane did stop to refuel (in Perth), but, nonetheless, the entire Sydney-Johannesburg trip took less than 14 hours. And here’s the rub: it’s the time in the air that’s the issue and not the refuelling stops.

Look at their flat earth map and one can see that the distance between Australia and South Africa is about the same as between Australia and the UK, yet the Sydney-London flight (via Singapore) takes about 23 hours flying time (see here, for example: www.britishairways.com/en-gb/destinations/sydney/flights-to-sydney).
